Keeping Betta Fish is more than just throwing in a few flakes and changing the water once in a
while. Though most people don't go beyond that and that is their first mistake. Aquariums are not just
a pretty little thing to look at. Betta fish if not taken care of properly will get sick and disease and
die. Most newbies lose interest in fish care after the newest wears off and give up!
Standard knowledge of fish keeping, knowing what supplies are best, is vital to the happiness
and healthiness of your fish. Maintain the optimum living conditions for your fish is very important, along with any living plants in your tank also.
Some people think that fish are just fish and all of them can be taken care of the same way, but they
are not. You can not do the same things for Gold fish as you do for Betta fish. The same goes for
the sexes of fish. Whether to have the male in the same tank as the females in certain breeds.
Betta Fish are also know as Siamese Fighting fish. So separation from females while not breeding is
vital. But also you need to know you can't put two males together that is why when you buy them,
the pet store usually have them separated.
Overfeeding fish or changing water all the time can cause your Betta fish to loose their health. Maintaining aquariums needs to be taken serious and it is helpful to have good advice from someone that has been doing it a long time and knows what to do. Proper ph levels are good for longevity of your fish. Knowing what to look for if your fish is sick and how to treat it also is good to know.
Keep them in small bowls is not a great substitute for tanks larger and with aeration. Aeration is simple process of re-oxygenating the water. Fish get their oxygen from the water. A great many people assume that a small bowl for one fish is a good idea. That is never a good idea. You need aeration to any tropical fish you keep for very long. Small containers are only good for short periods of transporting you fish to another location. You need to know what to feed and how much to feed and how to supply good water for your fish tank cause eventually they will die if not maintained properly.
There are plenty of excellent books and magazines and web sites about Betta fish aquariums. Reading and taking good advise about your new hobby goes along way in providing the best care you can give your Betta fish.
