Any household, or a living room in particular, can not do without a couch. Couches are basically called by many names. Some call them sofas, while others refer to them in various names such as chesterfields, davenports, and settees. Couches come in various forms and styles, such as the two-seater, the three-seater, the chaise lounge, and the corner sofa. A love seat is a smaller version of the couch. There are also couches that can be folded into beds, like the futons, which are similar in nature. Sofas also come with canopies for added decoration and privacy.
There are also antique couches which are collected by some individuals, especially those who have houses that have a distinct antique or ancient look. An antique sofa can make an antique themed-home look more sophisticated and distinct. Having a good antique couch can make an antique-themed home impressive to one’s guests.
Couches are essential items in the living room. A new couch can make the re-decoration of the home easier. Couches are available in many styles, and they have been popular household items for the past decades. Every household has a sofa, proof of how valuable and popular it has been among homeowners. Couches are like radios and television sets - every household should have these items. What makes couches popular is the fact that there are many types available that can suit one’s budget.
Before this century, the couch or the sofa was commonly referred to the long and upholstered seat where one can rest his head while lounging on it. During the middle ages, the couch was similar to the daybed. In the 19th century, it was commonly referred to as the ladies lounging seat.
After the Industrial Era, sofas soon became a staple item in every household. The popularity of couches was that enormous that it was unconceivable for a house not to have any sofa in them.
For many years, too, couches have been associated not only with households but also for relaxation. Psychologists, for one, usually have a couch in their offices or clinics. Patients of psychologists lie down in a sofa for a session, since lying down is a proven way of helping interpret dreams. When a patient lies down, the therapist can more effectively listen to the stream of consciousness of the patient. The concept is that it helps a person open up more when he or she is in a reclined position, especially if he or she is not looking at the psychologist.
Couches are also visible in mainstream media. Who can forget The Simpsons, the popular American show wherein the sofa has become a staple item, particularly when the Simpson family poses for the camera?
The couch is one of those pieces of household furniture that is associated with comfort and relaxation. For years, we have seen it vary in dimensions and styles but what has made it a staple item in our homes is the fact that it dresses up a room. The couch is one item you should not miss in your household. You can always have a good looking sofa that can add to the look of your home without having to spend a lot.
