There is a certain level of equality that necessarily exists between all people: not a single one of us is perfect. No matter what anyone has told you, there simply is no perfect human. Every single person on the planet has different combinations of strengths and weaknesses, gifts and flaws, that are are unique to that person. Therefore, when looking at an institution such as marriage, which binds these two people together in relationship with the intention of it lasting for the rest of their lives, there is a certain amount of give and take that will have to happen. In such cases, if a balance is not found instinctively by those in the marriage, it can be very helpful to seek an outside perspective.

While there is a certain amount of stigma that often gets attached to those who seek counseling, this should not be the case, for many reasons. For one, the assumption that those who seek counseling have a failing marriage is something that should be thrown right out the window. Many a healthy marriage could be made even more blissful should the husband and wife take the time to learn more tools to support one another and communicate more effectively. You would not be ashamed of going to school or learning something new, so why feel that way about doing that for your marriage?

Of course, knowing that is one thing, it is another thing entirely to actually go out and seek marriage counseling. Raleigh, NC is the state capital as well as part of the Raleigh-Durham triangle area. It is a wonderful place to live, work, and in this case, find marriage counselors. Raleigh, NC has a variety of professionals in that field, which means that you can pick out the person who is just right for you and your spouse. One way to find a marriage counselor (Raleigh, NC-based or otherwise) is to ask for recommendations. Many people have friends or family who have sought counseling or who might happen to know a counselor socially. Many times, checking with your pastor, priest, rabbi, religious-official-of-your-choice is a great way to find people who have worked with others in your community. This can be helpful for those who wish to have their spirituality be a large part of the process.

Of course, if you cannot find marriage counselors, Raleigh, NC, like all places, has a pretty good Internet representation. The advantage of going this route is that it has information far above and beyond that which you are going to find in the phone book. Online, you can read articles written by therapists that you are considering, you can see how they present themselves on their website, and you can also read reviews written by previous patients. They likely won't give personal details, but it is always nice to hear stories of success when you are looking for someone to provide you with such valuable skills and insights. This is your marriage, after all. You agreed to be in this for life, so it's important to be willing to put in a lifetime's worth of energy- after all, that's what you will be getting in return.
