CHAPTER ONE: God declares Jesus is His Son.

To know Jesus Christ is to know God. This knowledge enables us to experience and savor our life even with a chronic condition. How is that feasible? It is possible when we apply Christ’s words of truth and promises to our everyday living. God’s words can spiritually move us beyond the limitations of our physical suffering.

We begin our study in Exodus with God identifying Himself to Moses: “I AM WHO I AM… The LORD, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob… This is my name forever, the name by which I am to be remembered from generation to generation.” (Ex. 3:14 15 NIV) This same God, centuries later, tells us who Jesus is when He is baptized, “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.” (Mark 1:11 NIV), and when His human appearance is altered on the Mount of Transfiguration, “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!” (Mark 9:7 NIV)

In this chapter, we’ll study Jesus Christ’s relationship to God so that we may practice applying scriptural truth to our daily needs.

CHAPTER TWO: God identifies Jesus with many names.

Throughout both Old and New Testaments, Jesus has been identified with more than one hundred different names: precious cornerstone, Messiah, the Christ, Son of the living God, Immanuel, King of the Jews, author and perfector of our faith, the head of the church, and many more. Names are meaningful to God, as evidenced in John’s Gospel: “But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.” (John 20:31 NIV)

God exalts Jesus by giving His Name power over all other names: “Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Phil. 2:9-11 NIV) Jesus’ many names reveal the character and attributes of our God. When pain threatens to take over our horizon, knowing His qualities will remind us that He is bigger than our circumstances.

CHAPTER THREE: God provides Jesus as our Savior.

It is not enough to know about Jesus—information is not knowledge. For Him to be our silver bullet against pain and illness, we must believe and accept as truth that Jesus carried our pain, our suffering, and our sins to the cross, that He arose alive from the burial tomb, and that He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of Holy God. He now dwells as God in our hearts when we invite Him to do so. We do not have to explain how these things can be, only believe that they are.

CHAPTER FOUR: God affirms that Jesus is the way to Him.

The solution to mankind’s dilemma—sin separating us from God—is found in Jesus’ statement, “No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6 NIV) Jesus is stating that the presence of God in our lives occurs only when we believe that He is the I-AM whom Moses met at the burning bush. Jesus declares He existed before creation, He is now with His creation—that’s us—and He will be with us through all eternity. He existed before our pain, is with us now in our pain, and will be there when our pain is no more.
